New Year- New Proclamation and McCalls 5516 Ruffle Dress Pattern Review

Happy New YEAR!

As I continue on my journey to perfect the art of garment making.  I have decided to try something new.  I am going to venture into the realm of "underpinning "making, that is, I will be trying my hand at sewing bras and underwear and will even try some crocheting of sock...OMG!  I can't believe I just put that out into the universe.  I, of course, will continue to bring you my sewing adventures but will add this very "interesting" twist to it all.

I recently sewed the McCall's 5516 dress out of a denim material and I love it! Here's my review:

Pattern Description:
It's a pullover dress with self-faced front and back yoke.  I completed view C

Pattern Sizing:
I cut a size 6

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Yep,  It looked exactly like the pictures on the envelope.

Were the instructions easy to follow?
The project was fairly easy to put together.  I used the instructions particularly when it came time to put together the sleeves.  The sleeves have 3 parts to it, the upper sleeve, the lower sleeve and the sleeve stay.  I referenced the instructions to ensure that I was putting the sleeve pieces the right way and in the right order

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
There is nothing that I disliked about the pattern.  I really enjoyed the puffy sleeves in View C and the ruffles at the bottom.  I can see created a simple pullover top with this pattern

Fabric Used:
I used a cotton denim material with no stretch

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
Because the pattern has the option for petite woman, I simply adjusted the pattern based on the adjustment lines for petite.  I also shorten the overall length of the dress because I wanted a shorter look.  I also adjusted the length of the sleeves because I wanted to ensure that I had a 3/4 length

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
Absolutely.  It was a quick sew and I like the fact that there are variations for this dress.

Conclusion:
It a quick pattern that can be sewn in a day.  You can use both woven and knit fabric depending on the fit and look that you may want for this dress. I like this dress, I can see making it in a lighter fabric for a summer tunic.

Here's how it turned out

Happy Sewing!

  1. I have under-garments on my to-sew list in 2015. I am going to start easy and leave the bra until I have master the under-garment.

Love the look of the McCall's -- picture with it on please!
