Inspired By the Movies

So I have finally finished my Inspired By the Movies dress!  Yeah Me!

Pattern Review:

Pattern Description:
Butterick Retro Dress

Pattern Sizing:
I cut a size 8

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Yes, it looked exactly like the pattern envelope.

Were the instructions easy to follow?
Yes they were pretty straight forward.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
I am not a fan of gathering because the thread always breaks on me, but this time I took my time and tried a few different gathering techniques and it worked! Yeah!

Fabric Used:
I used a Chinese Brocade fabric with a black background with a dragonfly embroidery. I used a mauve colour satin lining

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
I cut a size 8 but they I had to taken in the bodice to fit approximately half inch on each side.

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
Ummm, I don't think I would sew it again. I don't think I will need another dress like this. Although, I have used the bodice for a few other "frankenpatterns" dress. So who knows! I would recommend this to other though!  Cute dress, fits nicely with the Dolman sleeves it is flattering on most bodies

I really liked this pattern and style. I have always been fascinated with the 1950's dresses and so I was so excited to create this dress. I want to add a more modern twist by using the Chinese Brocade fabric.

I made a petticoat, which was an experience.  I have never worked with tulle and so it was "interesting"to get it to cooperate with me and to lay the way I want it. After I tried the dress on with and without the petticoat, I decided that I would wear it WITH the petticoat, it provides an additional WOW factor!.

The process

The Finished Project!

  1. I am loving this dress. Vintage is wear I'm at and you are Rocking it!!!

  2. Oh my gosh! This is so much fun! I just watched that movie over the weekend for the first time (loved it!)... you coulda been the fourth gal in that fancy apartment searching for a millionaire husband :)

  3. Love it with the petticoat, it shows off your tiny waist.

  4. You really knocked this one of the park! I love choice of it a modern twist but retains the elegance of the period. Lovely-Lovely-Lovely!
